Abstract
To fully achieve the goal of fully automating the design of information systems, computer-assisted software engineering (CASE) tools must be based on a formalization of the design process. A formulation of this process in artificial intelligence (AI) terms and its implementation within the expert design tool OICSI are proposed. The knowledge base (KB) of the tool, which is homogeneously composed of knowledge triplets consisting of situation, decision, and action, is presented. Triplets reflect the decision-oriented view of the design process. They are defined and exemplified through the design task that consists in defining the appropriate structure for a relationship between two objects
