Abstract
The use of high speed electrical motors for direct driving of compressors may be very interesting in terms of installation or maintenance costs and reliability. During the 1980s; ACEC ENERGIE developed the concept of a high speed induction generator driven by two overhung impellers, using the expansion power of natural gas. The same concept of a central motor flanked by two overhung impellers has been used in an induction motor application, for natural gas pipeline compression stations. The authors describe this 6 MW, 10000 RPM application and also show how this high speed electrical motor design may comply with other industrial applications
