Abstract
In this paper, we studied the impact of shunt capacitors on power system small signal stability. Heffron-Phillips generator model was first applied to theoretical analysis of this problem. Explanation and some discussions to negative damping phenomena captured in past simulation studies were also presented. Then, simulations on a 10-bus system and New England 10-generator-39-bus system were used to demonstrated the analytical results. Some useful suggestions on the improvement of power small signal stability were given in the last based on the studies of this paper
