Abstract
Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are salient when designed with buried or interior magnets. Salient pole PMSM have shown better torque capability by utilising the reluctance torque, and may have a large flux weakening region when compared to the more common non-salient pole PMSM. A new approach for flux weakening in PMSM drives is presented, and a fast digital vector modulator with look-up tables is described. The control principles are verified by simulations and laboratory tests on a 2.8 kW salient pole PMSM drive
