  • Abstract
The author discusses the introduction of digital transmission in the telecommunication networks of electricity power companies. Following an initial explanation of the problems involved, the main features of the existing analogue networks and especially the importance of PLC (power line carrier) communication are discussed. The author explains the advantages of digital techniques with special emphasis given to digital transmission via optical fibres. The aspects which have to be taken into account when changing from analogue to digital communication are also discussed. Two examples of mixed analogue and digital communication using PLC and optical fibres and the advantages of such solutions are given. Future developments as the trend to digital techniques continues are illustrated by an example of a digital network
