  • Abstract
    A discussion on the initialization of the electromagnetic transient programs (the EMTP-type programs) is presented in this paper. Since power systems are getting larger, establishing the steady state of a network for transient study can be very time consuming. Initializing the EMTP-type programs must be undertaken to improve their solution speeds. To promote the efficiency of these simulation tools, related discussions are in demand. Some EMTP-type program initialization methods, such as the phasor-solution technique, the EMTP-based approach, and the load-flow-program-based method, are described in the paper. The formation, the advantages, and the disadvantages of these techniques are discussed
