Abstract :
During the past two decades, we have witnessed huge changes in ways and extend to which the Internet has been used. The quickly growing numbers of users, devices, mobility, traffic volumes, types of applications, and the growing demands on the Internet as efficient and universal connectivity provider, has caused a considerable need for research and development in the area. Since about one decade, research on Networks of the Future has investigated ways to ensure the future of data communications through both revolutionary and evolutionary approaches with Internet technology as a background. This work is amongst others reflected in activities and outcomes of the European Networks of Excellence EuroNGI (2003–2006, http://www.eurongi.org), EuroFGI (2006–2008, http://www.eurofgi.org) and Euro-NF (2008–2012, www.euronf.org), of which NGI has been the flagship conference since 2005.
