Abstract
NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) has been developing an experimental HDTV digital transmission system that conforms to the SMPTE 240 M HDTV standard. The coding algorithm in the codec is based on a hybrid DCT method. The authors outline the technical aspects of this HDTV codec. In order to evaluate the coding system at various bit-rates, some subjective quality assessments have been carried out. The system can function at bit-rates of 60-160 Mbps for picture quality assessment. The results of the evaluation are also reported
