Abstract :
The authors discuss the uncertainty about when HDTV will become available, and the likelihood of multiple standards. They suggest that the success of HDTV will depend on the availability of quality programmes. The use of film in TV production makes programmes available for current 4:3 aspect ratio television and also for any future 16:9 aspect ratio HDTV. Film provides one international technical and quality standard. The Super 16 mm film format is recommended because it is more cost effective than 35 mm film and provides a 15:9 aspect ratio which is close to that of HDTV. Super 16 mm is compared with 16 mm film and 35 mm film, and it´s corresponding production technology is discussed
