Concept behind 1/2" digital component video recorder with D3 playback compactibility

The technical developments for the establishment of the D3 format have been used by Panasonic as a `platform\´ for the development of the component digital video recorder. The use of the D3 format allows the 1/2" VTR to be configured with full replay compatibility of standard D3 recordings directly into the digital component environment, without the use of any adaptors or additional peripheral equipment. The additional recording capacity required for component recording compared with D3 composite recording is achieved by increased linear tape speed, redesigned head assemblies and VLSI circuits for data processing
