  • Abstract
There has been a great deal of attention focused on digital compression and transmission of television signals. Among applications discussed for such technology is the transmission of PAL, NTSC and HDTV in a bandwidth efficient manner, across various transmission media. Though a great deal of attention to this application was brought about by the Federal Communication Commission´s process for choosing a terrestrial HDTV broadcast standard for the US market, near-term applications for compression seem to focus on NTSC and PAL. Much progress has been made in the United States on the practical use of this technology. An overview of this progress is presented through an update on DigiCipher, one of the leading systems in the US, and its part in the FCC HDTV standardization process
