Abstract
The design considerations of high frequency two-stage electronic ballast for metal halide (MH) lamps are presented in this paper. To eliminate acoustic resonance, which is inevitable trouble for MH lamps operating in high frequency, the low frequency sinusoidal wave frequency modulation (FM) injected into half bridge LC resonant inverter makes the frequency and amplitude of lamp voltage and current fluctuating in specific range. A novel simple FM circuit is proposed based on PWM chip´s characteristic. A 250 W prototype electronic ballast verifies the operation of MH lamp with free acoustic resonance. Experimental results show this approach is suitable for lamps from different manufactures.
