Abstract
The CityNet service was introduced in the autumn of 1989 for corporate business customers in Helsinki. The idea of the service is to provide first big corporate customers and then later all the main business centers with access to the Helsinki Telephone Company´s (HTC) fibre optic network. The need for the service was obvious already in 1987 when the first big private fibre optic networks to interconnect corporate wide LANs were built. The dedicated multimode fibre optic cables were provided by the HTC. It soon turned out to be impractical to provide all the big customers with dedicated cables and varying assemblies of different multi-mode and single-mode fibres. CityNet was introduced to serve corporate customers in their need of interconnecting LANs
