Abstract :
Badly designed interactive systems can handicap users, who are usually blamed by manufacturers for their own difficulties. (´Users should read the manual first´, they say). This attitude not only hinders users but turns attention from the engineering design of interfaces to the psychology of usability. The author argues, with examples, that there is ample scope for the improvement of interfaces through better engineering.<>
