Abstract
The main attributes expected of managers by the City are the same as those required by industry itself-the ability to devise and execute effective management strategies and to communicate the results to others. The author explores the issue in detail, and considers what makes a successful company. The author suggests that the skills necessary to become and remain a successful manager, particularly in the private sector, are the ability to develop an appropriate plan, to communicate to others what the plan is, to do it effectively, and then to ensure that the success is recognised
