The author describes some physical possibilities for absolute laser frequency standards in the optical communication bands around 1.5 and 1.3 μm. Such standards are required for example in frequency division multiplexing (FDM) systems to position in the spectrum the sets of lasers offset and locked from one another at each terminal: the accuracy needed for this is typically a few MHz
