  • Abstract
The existing structure of the electricity supply industry (ESI) in West Germany reflects the federal structure of the country and the complexity of the ESI is the result of the historic development of the industry. In order to understand the envisaged structure of the ESI in East Germany the organisational schemes and structures of the ESI in West Germany are discussed. The author discusses the Electricity Act, concession contracts, fuel diversity, and SO2 and NOx reduction. The author then discusses the state of the ESI in East Germany before reunification and the role of VEBA Kraftwerke Ruhr AG in the electricity market in Germany
