Abstract
By understanding the procedure of data acquisition and image formation in MR imaging one can use the theoretical basis to explain the production and propagation of respiratory motion artifacts. Furthermore, the study of the artifactual ghosts´ characteristics (i.e. intensity and separation of the ghost images) and the spatial blurring effects provide enough information to develop a concrete and precise methodology to overcome image degradation and improve the overall MR image signal-to-noise ratio. Several methods to restore image quality of artifactual images have been developed. The different techniques, used at the present time, for suppressing respiratory motion artifacts, are discussed
