Abstract
Briefly discusses research developments and future prospects for the use of highly inclined elliptical orbits (HEOs) for sound broadcasting. Whilst further study is required, it is believed that satellites with their wide coverage would form a necessary compliment to or perhaps enhance the viability of terrestrial systems. The first results of economic studies indicate that HEO techniques will make satellites attractive to broadcasters and that the consumer will be able to afford receivers, whilst making a contribution to broadcaster revenues
