Abstract
A wide variety of application areas have been identified for the emerging field of distributed multimedia systems. These include office information systems, scientific collaboration, conferencing systems and distance learning. However, distributed multimedia systems are still at an early stage of development and many of the proposed applications have yet to be realised. This paper describes a set of requirements that may be used to determine the communications support for the future distributed multimedia applications. It outlines the design and implementation of an experimental system that includes protocols and communications services which meet these requirements
