Abstract
The concept of public key certificates have been known to the academic community and to industry for a long time. However, dealing with certificates still is, or at least appears to be tedious and cumbersome. The problem is exacerbated by complex standards as well as lack of interest from vendor and from user side. In this survey some of these issues are addressed.
