Abstract :
The Engineering Council has prepared a Code of Good Practice for its registrants, setting out what is expected of their conduct in respect of engineering risk issues. It gives advice and support to registrants, but is also a reference against which professional conduct can be judged, both by the council and by the public at large. It will form the centrepiece of a major initiative by the Council to raise awareness in industry, government and education of the vital role of systematic risk assessment and management if disasters are to be avoided. The author discusses the background issues to the code and its content including the 10 point code of practice
