Abstract
The dramatic adoption of PCs and local area networks (LANs) in the last seven years was driven by the need to share and distribute information. Now, organisations are starting to count the cost. There is a growing threat to your organisation from a lack of proper information security: a threat which will cause near crippling losses to about one in ten organisations. A major survey concluded that little was being done to protect information. It´s time to face up to the lack of LAN security. The article introduces some new ideas which can lead to affordable, easily managed, secure open system solutions
