Abstract
PSS/E was the first interactive power system analysis program, its origins dating back to the early 1970s. Since then it has been developed continuously, with the addition of new features and capabilities, so that today it is a comprehensive suite of programs. It provides: load flow; network reduction; transfer limit analysis; (unbalanced) fault analysis; relay coordination; (long term) dynamic simulation; eigenvalue and frequency response analysis; and interactive graphics. Related programs, sharing common data, provide: unbalanced power flow; optimal power flow; harmonic calculations; and reliability analysis. The authors illustrate some of the more unusual features of PSS/E, and how they have been exploited by one user, Scottish Hydro-Electric, the first utility in the UK to have PSS/E. The discuss the graphical features, analytical features, and user customisation
