Abstract :
We have designed a distributed archival storage system, called Sustor, to store and share data in the event of disaster recovery. The key idea in designing the Sustor system is to use the small-world model for the overlay network of participating sites in the system. The small-world model is a model that inherits beneficial properties from random graphs and regular lattice rings. The small-world model improves resilience against network failure, improves performance of disseminating data among sites, and also improves overall storage efficiency. In this paper, we describe the design of the Sustor system and show the results of our experiments based on simulations.
