Abstract :
Experts of the cable manufacturers and utilities in Germany have agreed to a new extensive test system consisting of two separate parts: a long duration type test to be performed only once at each cable type, and a series of short and long duration quality control tests that must be carried out at cable samples taken periodically from the running production. The first-mentioned test has been entered to the VDE Specifications (DIN VDE 0273 Drafts A1 and A2 1991) whereas the second one will be part of future qualification requirements of the German power utilities. Both the extended type test according to VDE and the periodical long term quality control tests essentially contain a two years´ stress period under accelerated ageing conditions at which no breakdown due to ageing is allowed. The factors taken into account when formulating the stress parameters, and the most important parameters and limits of the type test, are discussed. Additional short time tests and first test experiences are discussed
