Abstract
This paper has discussed the initial stages in the development of a multimedia system as an integral part of an automated factory system. Even in its simplest form, it has shown considerable promise as well as highlighting the problems and limitations of such a system. The ease in use of the operator´s interface should gain wide acceptance on the factory floor. This type of system must be seen as an aid to the operator, not as a route to deskilling a particular activity
