Abstract
The concept of interchanging the regions of dielectric substrate and perfect electric conductor (PEC) of a uniplanar slot patch antenna (SPA) is explored which led to obtaining a complementary patch antenna (CPA). The slot patch antenna is derived from slot elements whose largest dimension is approximately one-fifth the radiation wavelength at the frequency of 869 MHz. The complementary shape of the slot patch antenna is then obtained by interchanging the regions of dielectric and perfect electric conductor. The feasibility of utilising these antenna configurations to support other RFID frequencies is also investigated.
