Abstract
The characteristics of an electric dipole and its complementary slot magnetic dipole that are relevant to radio frequency identification (RFID) are summarized. The electric dipole is derived from a strip element whose largest dimension is approximately half the radiation wavelength at the frequency of 869 MHz. The complementary configuration of the electric dipole is then obtained by interchanging the regions of space and conductor. The radar cross sections of these antennas are theoretically investigated with CST microwave studio. The modes of interaction with different mounting platforms are examined and validated using read range measurements.
