Abstract :
The authors describe the customer needs that can be satisfied by ATM networks and the `road-map´ showing how current and emerging networks are like to evolve to a full and potentially global B-ISDN offering. They break down the network requirements for such an offering into specific network components and detail how such components are being investigated at BTRL (British Telecom Research Laboratories). The current status of ATM worldwide, market drivers and the evolution towards ATM networks have been briefly reviewed
