Abstract
Consideration of physical constraints on the choice of frequency bands for broadband mobile systems leads to the following conclusions. For outdoor propagation the 60 GHz absorption band offers significant re-use advantages for all sizes >100m and also gives reduced delay spread components compared to non-absorption bands. In the millimetre-wave bands, essentially line-of-sight propagation must be considered, with sharp edges to shadow boundaries and deep `holes´ in shadow zones. Nevertheless some multipath from vehicle traffic may be observed. For indoor propagation there is little advantage to be gained in the use of 60 GHz over other millimetre wavebands. In the millimetre-wave range a 1 cell per room scenario must be considered unless outdoor illumination (iron windows) can be used. Infra-red should be considered as a competitive technology to millimetre waves
