Abstract
The development of intelligent networks (IN) is progressing with applications where the database interacts with the service switching point (SSP) to control the sequence in which basic call processing elements are brought into play. This gives the opportunity for services tailored to individual requirements controlled by personal service profiles held in the controlling database. In addition to service operating data required by the network these systems use database information for service control. The paper looks at some of the system design problems which need to be addressed as basic mobile and fixed services are enhanced and new services are defined e.g. universal personal telecommunications (UPT)
