The role of Russian scientists in the history of electrical and radio communication development

The given article describes the contribution of Russian scientists to development of electrical and radio communication during the period since the second half of the 19^th century till the first half of 20^th century, i.e. approximately more than one hundred years. Development of wire communication means is connected with the names of famous Russian scientists Pavel Shilling and Boris Jakobi (telegraph) Mikhail Mahalskiy and Pavel Golubitsky (telephone), Pavel Vajnarovskiy (communication lines). Alexandr Popov, a talented Russian scientist, made an outstanding contribution to the invention of radio. In 1894 he built his first radio receiver, which contained a coherer. Further it was presented to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society on May 7, 1895-the day has been celebrated in the Russian Federation as “Radio Day”. In March, 1896 Popov sent the telegram with two words “Heinrich Hertz” over a distance of 250 meters. On April 25, 1965 in the USSR the satellite “Molnija-1” with a transmitting-receiving backhaul station on its board was launched. Today Russia is an active member of a global information society; it increases the use of modern broadcast media and communication facilities: digital TV, mobile communication and the Internet.
