Abstract :
The author describes a TDMA (time-division multiple-access) portable radio system which has a quasi-fixed frequency-assignment architecture. This architecture is supported by two separate autonomous procedures for frequency assignment and for user access. A simple carrier sensing is performed by each port to determine its own frequency-reuse plan without requiring centralized control. The second autonomous procedure is used by each portable to select the best port transmission at access. The author discusses trade-offs of signal quality and traffic throughput based on these procedures
