Abstract
When part of the Spanish Army rose in Morocco on Friday July, the 17th, 1936, the Government tried unsuccessfully to channel all news through Union Radio network in Madrid and Barcelona, and overseas by the foreign language broadcasters of EAQ at Aranjuez, Madrid. The collapse of republican authority caused a “chaos” environment from the very beginning in the network, while the nationalists had to build a new broadcasting system from scratch, based upon the military engineers´ technical experience and organizational competence. All transmitters and receivers devices were not only targets for both bands, but also real weapons used to achieve critical military and political objectives. Considering the great impact of broadcasting during the conflict, the Spanish Civil War may be recognized as THE FIRST WAR RADIO.
