Abstract
A high performance reflective microdisplay has been developed that is capable of supporting color video operation at resolutions of XGA and above. The device uses ferroelectric liquid crystal and is fabricated over a silicon substrate on to which the reflective metal pixels and device addressing circuitry are fabricated. Both the silicon processing and the assembly of the LC cell use industry standard processes which results in a very high performance and low cost device. These displays are suitable for use in head mount and projection display systems. A particular advantage of the technology is that it enables the design and production of low cost single channel color systems which are predicted to be both cost and performance competitive with existing CRT products
