Abstract
The ERMES (European Radio Message System) radio interface is presented. Modulation, error correction, and transmission protocol characteristics are presented. Receiver sensitivity requirements are discussed and compared to the current radio paging standard, the CCIR Radio Paging Code no.1, also known as the POCSAG code. It is pointed out that a large number of services and facilities is included within the paging concept. The 3-kb/s offered user bit rate is 5-6 times higher than the corresponding 1200-b/s POCSAG figure. Moreover, the battery life will be significantly improved relative to existing paging systems
