Abstract
Summary form only given. The paper outlines the need for sensor fusion and the philosophy underlying it, then reviews some of the main issues in the field. In particular, it considers the problem of integrating numeric and symbolic data fusion techniques, the need for models of both sensor information and physical sensor devices, and the problem of finding an appropriate architecture for different information fusion applications. Examples including surveillance systems and process plant controllers are described in the context of these issues
