Abstract
This paper is to develop a multimedia tour guide system based on resource-limited mobile phones with location-based services without any other equipment. General mobile phones are popular nowadays and possible to be facilitated with advanced mobile services. By integrating multimedia clips and geographic information data together on the palm-sized devices, the tour guide system can acquire the location data with a GPS receiver, and register the longitude and latitude with the pre-stored geo-information, and then play the corresponding multimedia materials with a geographic tourist map, which not only can indicate the current position but also can be operated to get more location-based services. The tour guide data can be downloaded from data service center via cabled or wireless links to make the mobile tour guide suitable for any desired destination. The system is developed and the data organization scheme, GPS positioning, embedded GIS and multimedia clips playing control are implemented.
