Abstract :
Addresses the requirement of local area networks (LAN) to maintain performance under asymmetric traffic loads and hence to operate effectively with diverse service requirements. Current research centres on the performance of a multichannel architecture utilising attempt and defer protocols. The advantages of adopting a multichannel architecture on an optical fibre LAN are discussed. The network performance was investigated via discrete event simulation and the results are presented in the form of mean delay/throughput characteristics. The network transmission rates were investigated at 500 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s
