Abstract
Introduction: Moxibustion means application of heat directly or indirectly on the skin at certain points (called Acupuncture points) with a certain technique by igniting dried Moxa leaves. It is a method of treatment complementary and enhancing to Acupuncture therapy, in certain conditions alone can be more effective. Oriental belief is that Moxa leaves take away dampness from the body. Botanical name of the plant is Artemesia Vulgaris known as Indian wormwood. This Plant is also known as Mugwort which is considered to have special properties that protects weary travelers against exhaustion. This herb has a long history of folk tradition and use. Materials and Methods: Survey work were conducted as per specific format by the IRIIM Survey team comprising the author, in the Himalayan range to explore the proper location of Moxa and its similar plants, availability and local use. All the information regarding Moxa like herbs were recorded and for qualitative recognition images of herbs (plants & leaves) grabbed by a high-resolution digital camera. Accordingly, Moxa leaves were collected as per norms. Moxa Wool & Stick making machine parts were developed and final Moxa sticks were prepared for technology demonstration on different clinical conditions. Total 207 subjects suffering from various ailments like Common Cold due to climatic changes, Painful Joints, Diarrhoea, Back Pain and Stressful Conditions were selected. Detailed case history of each individual was noted in specific proforma of history sheet and Moxibustion technique was applied. Collected Data before and after Moxa technology application was recorded, subsequently findings were assessed. Result: It was observed that Moxibustion was very effective in controlling both acute and chronic ailments as well as prevention of recurrence of the complaints. Some patients got relief even after 1st or 2nd application. Conclusion: After thorough field survey, it was found that common inhabitants in the Hills- are extensively using Moxa in various conditions. Physicians and People can use moxa not only for the treatment of specific ailments but also for continuously maintaining good health as well as disease prevention.
