Abstract :
The laboratory inspection and analysis of several types of rope by edge tensile test, D/d tensile test and abrasion test were carried out in order to investigate the abrasion degradation by external damage and to obtain the fundamental data for measure against the abrasion. The following conclusion was obtained from the various tests. 1. The strength reduction rate if Dyneema Twell rope, 12-strands plated, and wire rope with small elongation obtained by edge tensile test and D/d tensile test became large. On the other hand, Hi-Zex Eight rope, 8-strands plated, with large elongation was small. However, the remained strength of the former is larger than the latter. Its rate of protected rope is better than that of rope without protection in the edge tensile test and D/d tensile test. 2. The property of Dyneema Twell rope against abrasion can be estimated good from the in-line abrasion test. The protection by the polyester belt is valid against abrasion. 3. The abrasion of towing rope is caused not only by the friction of in-line direction but also by that of transverse direction
