Abstract
Electrical interference, whether from a radiated source, electrostatic discharge or even via a mains source, can cause serious disturbances in safety-related systems which can result in injury to persons brought about by the malfunction of such systems. The author provide, an overview of the legal considerations relevant to malfunctions of safety-related control systems but with particular reference to malfunctions caused by electrical interference. He also describes changes to be made in the law consequent upon a European Community (EC) Directive on EMC
