Abstract
INMARSAT, operating four geostationary satellites with worldwide coverage, was originally intended for merchant ships, but now addresses the marine, land mobile, portable and aviation international markets. INMARSAT-C is a small, low power terminal ideal for fitting in vehicles such as trucks and cars. The relative simplicity of the INMARSAT-C system means that data, at 600 bit/s, is the only means of communicating, but INMARSAT have designed some innovative protocols into the specification which allow data reporting, polling and group calling, as well as standard messaging
