Abstract :
The UK Department of Transport specification for a new generation of cantilever mounted light emitting signs soon to be commissioned on the M25 takes cognizance of three evaluation sites, research at Aston and Southampton Universities and developments in Europe. The visual impact of the enhanced message signals as they are termed will be better then reflective signs, but the real efficacy of the signs will be observed in adverse weather conditions when the emitted light will penetrate drizzle and fog. The Scottish Office has piloted a number of variable message signs (VMS) systems. Schemes in Borders and Grampian Regions advise motorists of diversionary routes, when snow has blocked mountain roads, perhaps the most comprehensive VMS systems so far installed in Britain are the two systems providing traffic management and driver information on the Forth Road Bridge and A90/M90 in Fife Region
