Discusses some of the issues arising from the application of online diagnostic techniques to provide information about the performance of a high speed letter sorter used by the British Post Office. The paper first outlines the sorting machine and then it describes how the expert system installed in an external processor can provide guidance for three classes of user: the operator, the maintainer and the quality controller
