Abstract :
Ferroelectric liquid crystal devices can be successfully coupled with VLSI silicon technology to enable complex electro-optic systems to be built. Such smart SLMs can be binary or analogue, and can be used to modulate the intensity, phase, or polarisation state of light. A start is being made in designing such systems with electronic functionality at the pixel tailored for specific applications
