Abstract :
New digital methods of radio broadcasting, which offer superior reception on mobile receivers, are being investigated by the Eureka 147 Group in which the BBC has been participating. A system is evolving which provides more efficient use of the broadcast spectrum and which also promises CD audio quality and simplified receiver control. A hope is that this system, referred to as DAB, may become adopted as a future world standard. The paper describes the new developments which have made DAB possible. The main features of the system are discussed, including the benefits for the motorist in the form of improved receivers. The steps needed to prepare for a future service ae examined
