Abstract :
Summary form only given as follows. A high voltage power supply was required to support the development of an HPM system. The unit had to produce 100 kW of power. The output voltage and current requirements were 17.5 kV and 2.87 amps, respectively. It had to be robust enough to withstand shock and vibration, as well as climate variations. It also had to operate in an electrically transient environment. The unit is a standard AC to DC step-up transformer. It is capable of 200 kW of output power and is designed to operate at a 400 Hz line frequency. It consist of three main components: (1) 100 kW diesel generator prime power, (2) a phase controller, and (3) an AC to DC step-up transformer. The required input voltage of 416 V is provided by a commercial 100 kW diesel generator. The AC voltage from the generator is controlled by a phase controller before it is input to the transformer. The voltage is then stepped-up to a 35 kV sine wave. The sinusoidal voltage is then full wave rectified to a DC amplitude of +/- 17.5 kV. The unit was evaluated into a static load to approximately 115% of its rated specifications (120 kW). It was tested statically into a high energy water load. A second test is planned in a dynamic configuration. This paper attempts to give a detailed description of the various components. Additionally, it describes the evaluation process. Finally, it gives a description of the planned evaluations.
