Abstract :
Summary form only given as follows. A 100 kW battery system is required to support a HPM development program. The unit, as designed, would realize a significant size and weight reduction. It would replace a transformer type power supply and its diesel generator prime power source. The system described in this paper is built with standard car batteries and commercially available HV power supplies. The batteries are configured for approximately 350 volt output. The voltage output is defined by the DC input requirements of the high voltage power supplies. A future design will utilize lithium ion batteries for further weight reduction. The system is configured for a variety of charging configurations to maximize its versatility. The unit is designed to constantly charge a capacitor bank that is feeding a dual polarity PFN modulator. The modulator drives an 11 ohm load with 2 /spl mu/s pulses at 300 Hz. The paper describes the design, fabrication, and evaluation of the system. It also attempts to identify future applications for the unit.
